Stacy Lewis' rise to No. 1 has been about overcoming obstacles. On Tuesday, she made a detour on her way to Augusta to tell her story to one of American's most well-known medical professionals.
Lewis, who took the top spot on the Rolex Rankings in March, joined Dr. Sanjay Gupta for a sitdown interview on CNN's Human Factor, filmed in Atlanta. Lewis talked about overcoming scoliosis and the changes she made in her golf swing to accommodate a rod and screws inserted on her spine. The interview will air at a later date.
"It was cool to go to such a big opportunity like that," she said. "Dr. Gupta asked me to bring my clubs to see how I swing… and how it was different from before my surgery. He was thinking about how it all works."
Lewis also joined CNN's World Sport program with host Don Riddell.
"As I talked everyone at CNN more, I could feel them getting more and more interested in my story," she said. "As we got into it, I could feel them getting excited."
Tonight, Lewis will accept the Female Golfer of the Year award during the Golf Writers Association of America annual dinner in Augusta, Ga. She will be joined by Male Golfer of the Year Rory McIlroy.
"Obviously I'm excited to get the Golf Writers award tonight and I'm looking forward to just to hanging out at the tournament for a relaxing week," she said. "I worked really hard last year to win Rolex Player of the Year and now I get to enjoy it."
Lewis attended practice rounds at the Masters as a kid and played at Augusta National during college, but this will be her first trip to the iconic golf destination at the top female golfer in the world.
The Rolex No. 1 next tees it up at the LPGA LOTTE Championship Presented by J Golf at Ko Olina Golf Club in Hawaii.
