Given a brief to design a caddy bib with a Singaporean theme, more than 30 students from the Visual Communication Department of the Raffles Design Institute took part submitting what they felt best reflected an Asian flavour.
The list of entries were cut to a final 10 but it was Tiffany Chui that walked away with the winning design and a prize of $1,000 deposited into an HSBC bank account in her name.
Chui's inspiration for the design centred around the HSBC logo but with a twist. She went for a contemporary look with an oriental touch to give it a Singaporean essence. The shape of the women golfer hitting with a club related it back to the HSBC Women's Champions tournament and the triangle elements stemming from the end of the golf club to emulate the strength of the golf swing were extracted from the HSBC logo - again tying it back to the title sponsor and the event.
"It is such a great honour to be able to take part and then win this contest," said Tiffany Chui. "I had no idea what to expect as the competition was tough among my class and everyone had good designs so it was a pleasant surprise to come out on top and I will definitely be watching out for my bib when the HSBC Women's Champions airs live on TV!"
The HSBC Caddy of the Year awards have become a mainstay event for both the HSBC Women's Champions and the HSBC Champions. Each year, a caddies' night is held during the week of the tournament where players nominate potentials and the HSBC Caddy of the Year is crowned, recognising what they have done for the sport. This year, as an icing on the cake, the uniquely-designed caddy bib will be presented to the winner and millions of fans worldwide will be able to catch a glimpse of the design when he or she wears it on the weekend.
"We are very pleased with how the competition turned out as there were some good designs," said Giles Morgan, Group Head of Sponsorship, HSBC. "However, Tiffany's design really stood out from the rest as we felt it was just the right fit and theme for the HSBC Women's Champions. We hope fans come out to catch this one-of-a-kind caddy bib and give their support to the HSBC Caddy of the Year."
Helen Alfredsson's caddy Tom Borwick take home top honours in 2009 so he will be donning the winning design for the first two days of this year's tournament, following which the 2010 HSBC Caddy of the Year will wear it on the weekend.
Raffles Design Institute was thrilled to be part of this initiative and Kenji Choo, Programme Director (Visual Communication Department) for Raffles Design Institute commented, "The students had a great time designing the caddy bibs as it is the first time Raffles Design Institute collaborated with HSBC for the HSBC Women's Champions, so it was a truly memorable experience for both the students and the school."
