Phyllis G. Meekins Scholarship

The Phyllis G. Meekins Scholarship is granted annually through The LPGA Foundation and the Phyllis G. Meekins Scholarship Fund. Established in 2006, the objective of the Phyllis G. Meekins Scholarship is to provide a need-based scholarship to a female high school senior from a recognized minority background who will be pursuing a full-time course of study and playing collegiate golf at an accredited college or university in the United States.

The Phyllis G. Meekins Scholarship is a need-based award granted to a high school senior from a recognized minority background who will be playing golf at the collegiate level. Qualifications for all scholarships include strong academic programs, community service and recommendations. Two $5,000 scholarships will be awarded in 2024.

Phyllis Galloway Meekins was a Professional, member of the LPGA Teaching Professionals Northeast Section Teaching Division, Founder of Phyllis G. Meekins Golf Clinics,Inc. (PGM) 1973.

Born in Orange, Virginia, served in the Women's Army Corp . (1942-44) during World War II in the European theater of operations with the 6888 Postal Service Unit . She was later educated at Virginia State College, and self improvement courses at Community College and Drexel University. Golf education was received at Stevens University and Dartmouth College through the National Golf Foundation; and at Pine Needles, South Carolina under the tutelage of Peggy Kirk Bell . In 1951 she married Frank R. Meekins of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and through their union, have one daughter, Denise Sarita Meekins-McBride, and two grandchildren, Jerrel and Jeremy .

Mrs. Meekins spent over 25 years as a public servant with the Federal government where her diligent service earned her many commendations. It was during her tenure with the government when she single-handedly organized the PGM Golf Clinics, Inc., the first and only such program known to date in the Delaware Valley that facilitates youth golfing activity year round. The space for operation was donated by Holy Cross Lutheran Church of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania .

In 1980, Mrs. Meekins extended the youth program to include a full six-week junior golf summer day camp conducted at the beautiful Freeway Golf Course in Sicklerville, New Jersey . PGM later extended the program to include adults, Special Population and Special Olympics .

In addition to her achievements in golf, Mrs . Meekins is recognized for her involvement in community-based and women ' s organizations . She is a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania , where she serves on the Darcus Guild .She is a member of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the Coalition of 100Black Women . She is dedicated to fostering equal rights and opportunities to Blacks, promoting the awareness of African American culture, and speaking out on specific issues of local, state, national and international importance affecting women and children . Mrs . Meekins is a member of Soroptimist International, Five Points Magneta Club (SI) .She was appointed in 1988 Coordinator of the Northeast Section Girl Scout Junior Golf Program .Other accolades received by Mrs. Meekins include the National Golf Foundation Outstanding Service Award ; the Frederick Douglass Political Club Community Service Award; the Department of Health, Education and Welfare Community Service Award; placement in the Urban League of Philadelphia's Century IV Exhibit at the Afro American Historical and Cultural Museum; Schlitz Brewery Athletic

Award; and a commendation from the Philadelphia Park Commission for organizing and sponsoring the City's first Golf Tournament that included all skill levels for the Bicentennial Year 1976 . Mrs. Meekins was inducted into the Afro American Golfers Hall of Fame in 1984 . Mrs . Meekins has received numerous other awards for tournament play, community service and professional achievement . In addition, her program has been used as a prototype for others.
