The madness that is March with its bracket-busting, college basketball mayhem now rolls into April on the LPGA Tour at the T-Mobile Match Play presented by MGM Rewards. It’s a chance for fans who had their NCAA bracket shattered by surprising upsets to find redemption with a lucky guess at who might come out on top in one of the most unique events on the LPGA Tour. The fifth edition of the T-Mobile Match Play gets underway on Wednesday at Shadow Creek Golf Course, where a limited field will square off for a chance to take home a share of $2 million in prize money and Race to the CME Globe points. Here is a closer look at what you need to know about the LPGA Tour’s return to Las Vegas.

The Format

This year, the T-Mobile Match Play will revert back to the format used two seasons ago in 2023. Players will be divided into 16 groups of four, and each athlete will then play one match against each of their group members Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in a round-robin group-play format, ultimately deciding who moves on to the round of 16. Those 16 players will then compete in a single-elimination bracket to determine who advances to the quarterfinals, semifinals and championship match at Shadow Creek.

The Field

A limited field of 64 players will compete this week at Shadow Creek. Seven of last year’s top-eight finishers are in the field again this year, including defending champion Nelly Korda, Rose Zhang, Angel Yin, Sei Young Kim, Narin An, Moriya Jutanugarn and Leona Maguire. Last season, when the T-Mobile Match Play featured a stroke-play format over the first three days of competition, Jutanugarn outlasted Brooke Henderson, Haeran Ryu and Yuka Saso – all of whom are back in the field in Las Vegas – in a three-hole playoff to earn the eighth and final spot in the weekend’s match-play bracket.

Lydia Ko, Jeeno Thitikul, Ruoning Yin, Lauren Coughlin, Jin Young Ko, Celine Boutier and Charley Hull are also teeing it up this season, along with Hyo Joo Kim, the winner of last week’s Ford Championship presented by Wild Horse Pass.

Nelly Korda Defends

On Sunday at the Ford Championship in Arizona, Nelly Korda entered the final round of her first title defense of the season within striking distance of the lead, but a final-round 69 left her well out of contention and in a tie for 22nd. Korda will seek to defend a title again this week and pick up her first win of the season at the T-Mobile Match Play presented by MGM Rewards. In 2024, Korda defeated Narin An in the semifinal match, winning 4 and 3 to advance to the championship match with Leona Maguire, who defeated Sei Young Kim 3 and 2 to face Korda in the finals. Korda got off to a hot start during that Sunday showdown with Maguire, winning four of her first seven holes and going on to defeat the Irishwoman 4 and 3 for her fourth consecutive victory and 12th career title on the LPGA Tour.

Back at Shadow Creek

For the fifth straight season, Shadow Creek hosts the LPGA Tour’s grueling test of endurance that is the T-Mobile Match Play. The 18-hole layout that Nelly Korda has called both breathtaking and brutal was designed by Tom Fazio and opened in 1989 in North Las Vegas, which is about a 20-minute drive north of the famed Las Vegas Strip. Shadow Creek is roughly 7,560 yards in length and hosted the PGA Tour's CJ Cup in 2020. The striking venue has twice hosted “The Match,” most recently doing so in December 2024 when Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler faced off against Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka.

How to Watch
