EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France — Chinese Taipei native Peiyun Chien made a hole-in-one during the final round of The Amundi Evian Championship.
The 33-year-old aced the par-3 16th hole at Evian Resort Golf Club from 155 yards with her 8-iron to record the first hole-in-one of her professional career and the fourth ace she has ever had in her life. The shot also propelled Chien into a tie for seventh at the year’s fourth major championship, her career-best finish in a major on the LPGA Tour.
“I know if I hit normal shot with draw, I don't have chance to stay on the green, so I tried to hit a fade and use the slope,” said Chien of her strategy on 16. “It looks like stay on the top and just keep a little bit more, move, move, and it's finally roll down and get in.
“This is the first one (since I turned) pro. So already 13 years, no hole-in-one in my life, so I'm so happy.”
In honor of Chien’s ace, CME Group will make a $20,000 donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as part of their CME Group Cares Challenge – Score 1 for St. Jude campaign. The Challenge is a season-long charitable giving campaign that turns aces into donations with a minimum guaranteed donation of $500,000 to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, which is leading the way in how the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and life-threatening diseases.
Chien’s hole-in-one raises the 2024 donation total to $280,000 as it was the third ace recorded during Amundi Evian Championship week, and when the LPGA Tour veteran learned that she would be contributing $20,000 to childhood cancer research, Chien was delighted by the news.
“It's really happy to hear about that I can help a lot of children,” said Chien. “It's great in my life. In Taiwan, I always donate for the stray dogs and a lot of (charity). That's good news to me.”
Celebratory drinks are typically how holes-in-one are celebrated, and Chien definitely has plans to have a round or two of beers with her friends to commemorate her major championship ace. But she has also made some other plans later this evening with her fellow countrywoman Wei-Ling Hsu.
“Free beer. Everybody can go in Evian tent,” Chien said. “We are going to go drink one beer, and I'm going to play my game Zelda on Switch with Wei-Ling (Hsu). She's waiting for me. We going to have some drink and play Zelda.”
