This year’s Chevron Championship featured a unique on-site and at-home mobile experience for fans to enjoy as they watched the world’s best players tackle a challenging Club at Carlton Woods.
In partnership with Accenture, the year’s first major championship saw the implementation of LPGA Fan Quest, an interactive mobile experience used to engage fans both as they walked around tournament grounds and watched the competition on TV.
Fan Quest incorporated three different components for fans to utilize, including an Augmented Reality scavenger hunt, a custom AI agent named Birdie and daily trivia and video challenges.
The AR scavenger hunt led fans to different on-site activities at The Chevron Championship, like Fan Quest headquarters, located in the Inspiration Dome, and the LPGA*USGA Girls Golf STEM Challenge. Each attraction visited earned fans a digital token, which could be exchanged for rewards such as LPGA Pro Shop gift cards, tournament tickets and more.
The Inspiration Dome was the on-site home of LPGA Fan Quest, offering patrons a chance to sign up for the app and practice their putting skills as well as interact with Birdie and various AR objects between the 9th and 18th greens at The Chevron Championship.
Sixty-one percent of Inspiration Dome visitors joined LPGA Fan Quest, and the AR scavenger hunt was by far the most popular of the experiences offered by the app, with users on average collecting five of the objects that were available at activations scattered throughout the tournament property.
Birdie allowed fans to learn new information about some of their favorite LPGA athletes, as well as ask questions about both The Chevron Championship and LPGA Tour. The AI-powered resource would answer any questions fan had about the top 15 LPGA Tour players and match users to a player based on their interests.
The daily trivia challenge helped fans to grow their knowledge of the LPGA Tour while enjoying the on-site experiences available at The Club at Carlton Woods, but also engaged fans who were watching the event from home with challenging questions about some of their favorite LPGA athletes and LPGA history.
While Fan Quest was successfully implemented in The Woodlands, Texas, a few key learnings will be taken into consideration at future LPGA Tour tournaments. Rewards will be available within one to two hours, as most fans spend just one or two days on-site at an event, and fans will be encouraged to sign up ahead of the tournament so they can spend as much time participating in the AR scavenger hunt as possible.
Overall, LPGA Fan Quest was a fan favorite at The Chevron Championship, connecting a new audience with the LPGA Tour in a fun and interactive way that promoted a full appreciation of the on-site tournament experience.
