Monday, Marina Alex returned to Portland where nearly one year ago she won her first event on the LPGA Tour at the Cambia Portland Classic. As she walked down a street in downtown Portland she was shocked when she saw her photo gracing a banner promoting this year’s tournament.
“Oh, me!” Alex exclaimed and then laughed after seeing the purple banner donning her image.
The return was a sweet one as the defending champion made stops at some of the most popular attractions in Portland, including the International Rose Garden and the famed Voodoo Doughnut, where her likeness was recreated on a one of the delicious treats. She also stopped by several local radio stations and met with media at Topgolf where she recalled her thrilling victory in 2018.
“It is great to be back. I will never forget how it felt to lift the trophy last year and the fans in Portland were incredible all week,” Alex said. “The city is so passionate about sport so it is always fun to come back here, especially as defending champion. I had a really interesting day yesterday seeing the many of the cool parts of Portland as well as taking part in the Topgolf in the afternoon.”
Alex fired a record-tying 62 in the opening round followed by a final round 65 to win by four strokes for her first win on the LPGA Tour.
