Players to Watch

Jin Young Ko- Ko makes her first career appearance at the Cambia Portland Classic, rattling off her fourth victory of the season. Her superb play extends beyond her victories, as it’s the second time this year she has posted four straight top 3 finishes Ko has not missed a cut on the LPGA Tour in her last 25 starts, with her only missed cut since joining the LPGA Tour coming at the 2018 Ricoh Women’s British Open. Over the subsequent 25-event stretch, the Rolex Women’s World Rankings No. 1 has only finished outside the top 25 three times: a T26 at the 2018 Evian Championship, a T69 at the 2018 CME Group Championship, and a T29 at the Honda LPGA Thailand this year.

Sung Hyun Park- Park’s top-10 streak was snapped at five in a row last week. She finished T20 in Canada. During her five consecutive top-10s, the world’s no.2 made her runs during the second rounds, averaging 5.2 shots under par. Park is making her career debut in Portland this week in her 16^thstart of the 2019 season.

Lexi Thompson- Thompson makes her sixth career appearance at the Cambia Portland Classic, and her third consecutive year making a start. Since the tournament moved to Columbia Edgewater Country Club in 2013, she’s had two top-10s in three appearances, finishing T9 in 2013 and 2018. Her lowest round was a 65 to open up her 2013 effort. It will be Thompson’s final tune-up before being one of the veteran players on the US Solheim Cup team.

Marina Alex became a Rolex First Time Winner last year in Portland, closing her Sunday effort with a 65, the lowest score of the day, to overtake Georgia Hall. “This is just such a surreal experience,” Alex said after her victory. “I played the best round of golf today that I’ve ever played, given the circumstance.” A year later, Alex returns having officially made the US Solheim Cup Roster, in her final 72 holes before her debut in Gleneagles.

This week focuses on the par-5 12th hole at Columbia Edgewater Country Club, a good scoring opportunity that requires players to weigh Risk and Reward from the tee and also for the second shot.
