Walking off the course after a peerless 66, the best round carded of the 2019 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, Mel Reid capped off a string of six consecutive strong rounds. She’s a combined 12 under par over those, including a T3 finish at the third major of the year.

It has brought back to the fold a goal of Reid’s for the year, making the Solheim Cup for Team Europe.

“Obviously, a lot of girls are playing really well, I would pick me.

“I think I bring a lot to the table besides my golf game. I play really well with Carlota, and I obviously love playing Solheim,” Reid said.

The tipping point for the three-time Solheim Cup veteran was last week at the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give last week.

“I think making the cut on the number, shooting 6 under on the weekend, I definitely found something there. It was nice to bring it into this week.”

Before that, Reid had been struggling. She had missed 10 of her prior 13 cuts dating back to August of 2018. Her best finish before the trip to Grand Rapids was T50 at the Kia Classic at the end of March.

While working consistently on her mechanics over the prior seven months, it took the weekend to bring the effort to fruition. She hit 28 of 36 greens at Blythefield Country Club to finish 6 under, vaulting her to a T39 finish.

She matched that number of greens in regulation at Hazeltine National over the weekend, totaling 52 of 72 greens for the tournament. Her 66 is her career best round at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, and is the opening argument Reid is looking to make.

“I know I’m in a position where they’ll probably have to pick me. Hopefully I keep the momentum up for the next six, seven events and then she will hopefully have no choice but to pick me.”

Reid tees it up again next week at the Walmart Northwest Arkansas Championship Presented by P&G, looking to keep Catriona Matthews attention to fight her way to Gleneagles.
