The second round of the Indy Women in Tech Championship Driven by Group 1001 was suspended at 8:22 p.m. ET due to darkness. Seventy-two players will return to the course Saturday morning at 7:45 a.m. to finish the second round.
Sung Hyun Park and Lizette Salas share the early lead after day two in Indianapolis. Each completing their rounds before the delay.
Park posted a 9-under, 63, her best in 2018. She agreed through an interpreter that it was, in fact, her best round to date, but explained that her putting was what really helped her out there today.
The Republic of Korea native carded three birdies on the front nine and six on the back to post the low round of the day.
“I'm going to do really well,” said Park. “I feel really good about my game, especially my short game, since my practice. And it's just about -- it's about the weather now, so hopefully, the weather's good.”
Salas took advantage of an early start and had another solid day. She admitted it was going to be hard to top her 62 yesterday but knew she had to remain patient, knowing the golf course would play differently on day two.
“I mean, well, it's early morning, so -- I don't know,” said Salas. “This was a completely different golf course, so I had to change my mentality a little bit and just kind of -- I had to forget about the 62 in a way and just go back to what I was doing. And so yeah, a lot of positives.”
She’s hoping to make more putts this weekend but doesn’t plan to change much.
‘Honestly, just keeping the same mentality, same aggressiveness on certain clubs and certain pins. I think it's pretty boring for me,” explained Salas.
Danielle Kang and Nasa Hataoka sit two back of Park and Salas at 11-under par. The hope is to start round three at approximately 12:00 p.m. in groups of three, off of the 1st and 10th tees.
Second Round To Resume Saturday Morning
For the second day this week, rain poured down on Brickyard Crossing Golf Course. Heavy rains that moved through the area made the course unplayable and forced the suspension of play during the second round on Friday. The horn blew at 2:32 p.m. ET to alert players to evacuate the course. Play resumed at 6:15 p.m. ET but was ultimately suspended for the day at 8:22 p.m. due to darkness.
The second round will resume Saturday morning at 7:45 a.m. ET and once it is complete, the 36-hole cut will be made. The projected cut is currently at 3-under par. Defending champion Lexi Thompson has ten to complete, but currently sits well inside the cut line at 6-under par.
Green Feeling Confident
Hannah Green had a hot start to her rookie season with a T11 at the Pure Silk Bahamas LPGA Classic followed by a solo third at the ISPS Handa Women’s Australia Open but admits she’s not performed well since early this year.
“It's nice to just be back in -- you know, in contention again,” explained Green. “But I still am happy with how things are going, and hopefully still in the Asian swing, and hope I can have a good result, yeah, to make sure that I stay in that. But overall, I think it's been pretty good.”
The Aussie ranks 123rd on Tour in rounds under par but with her performance, this week, posting back-to-back rounds in the 60s in the opening two rounds at the Indy Women in Tech Championship Driven by Group 1001, she’s showing her early season form.
“It’s been a long time coming,” said Green. “I played well the last two days. I didn’t capitalize on the little putts. But, no, things are in the right direction, it's nice.”
“Probably the most confident I have been in at least the last three months, so it's nice to be having -- having things go the way that you want,” said Green. “So, yeah, no, I'm really excited for the weekend.”
Green attributes her confidence to having spent some time back home at her home course in Perth, Australia with her coach and working on her swing. She admits that her swing changes daily, so they focused on making sure she was consistent.
“We actually found a new drill that really works well for me, so I think that's been the difference, which is nice. Just something really simple, but it's something that I can do myself without him having to be there.”
“Yeah, it's actually a -- like an elastic band tubing. And I put it under my left foot and then actually swing with it, so it's just like a little bit of, I guess -- just something that makes me feel the swing more. So, yeah, it's really helped, I think, to make my swing more consistent, so I can hit better shots when I'm out there.”
