In “The Founders” film, an inspiring story for the ages which documents the creation of the LPGA, is now available for purchase on iTunes, Amazon and other digital platforms.
The 13 LPGA Founders – Alice Bauer, Patty Berg, Bettye Danoff, Helen Dettweiler, Marlene Bauer Hagge, Helen Hicks, Opal Hill, Betty Jameson, Sally Sessions, Marilynn Smith, Shirley Spork, Louise Suggs and Babe Zaharias – were more than just athletes. They banded together to plan tournaments, create the original LPGA by-laws, set up the golf course and even hand out tickets.
Stacy Lewis, who served as a co-producer for the film, knew that this was a story that had to be told.
“There was none of this practicing and going and working out stuff. They were setting up a golf course, trying to fill the fields and doing everything themselves,” said Lewis, who actively corresponds with Marilynn Smith. “I think we take it for granted at times and, you know, the money that they played for was not there. I feel really lucky to be doing what I’m doing, and I think everybody on Tour should feel that way.”
