PURDUE BOILERMAKER AUGUST KIM IN HUNT

August Kim moved into contention on Saturday with a 5-under, 67 to move from T26 to a tie for third.

Kim was the 2016 Big Ten individual champion and closed her career at Purdue in 2017 by earning First Team All-American honors after tying for fourth at the 2017 NCAA Championships at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois. Her final year at Purdue was excellent as she finished with the third-best single-season stroke average in program history (72.55).

Kim is in her first season on the Epson Tour. She is making her fourth start this week and her best finish is a T15 at the Four Winds Invitational.

TWO PLAYERS MAKE FIRST ACES ON HOLE 16

Jenna Peters (Kohler, Wisconsin) made her first career ace on hole 16. Two groups later, Kate Machado (Scottsdale, Arizona) also made her first career ace on hole 16.

Peters had 107 yards to the pin while Machado calculated 108 yards. Peters used a pitching wedge while Machado grabbed a 50-degree wedge.

Machado made a birdie on the par-5 15th and then made the ace. She went onto post a 2-under, 69 and made the cut on the number. Peters missed the cut.

Machado had two practice round hole-in-one’s, but none in tournament competition.

“We thought if the wind took the ball a little we had a chance,” said Machado, who couldn’t see it go in from the tee box. “It helped a ton. It did quite a bit.”

Peters’ ace came with her brother on the bag and her mom and dad in attendance. It was the first ace for her entire immediate family and all four play regularly (Peters’ has twin brothers).

Earlier in the week, Peters met legendary architect Pete Dye and a got a picture with him. Dye kissed her on both cheeks. Peters is from Kohler, which has two Pete Dye-designed tracks (Whistling Straits and Black Wolf Run).

She summed it up by saying that Dye had some influence on her first career ace.
