Like anyone else, we like hearing nice things about our organization but especially love hearing about our membership and tournaments and the positive influences they have on others. Recently a fan shared his feedback after visiting the 2016 Marathon Classic Presented by Owens Corning and O-I.
I attended the Marathon Classic on Thursday in Sylvania, Ohio and I would like to share my experience.
First off, it was Senior Day so those 55 and older received free parking and admission. Genius marketing. It was well attended. I drove there from Cleveland, which is about a two-hour trip one way. It was worth the effort.
The free bus shuttle from the offsite lot was quick and convenient. Upon arriving at the first tee, I saw Brittany Lincicome and Paula Creamer. They both went up to the volunteers on the tee box and introduced themselves and thanked the volunteers for working in advance. Class, just class. Sandra Gal and her grouping were up next, and it was the same thing. And both groupings also said good morning to the crowd.
After watching some incredible tee shots, I wandered to the back of the course. I met a very nice gentleman working No. 15 and a fantastic lady working number No. 7, who showed me on her program how the caddies colored vests were listed to distinguish who the players were from a distance. Another great move. This lady was so passionate about her spot and enjoyed talking about it.
About that time I noticed Michelle Wie's father walking towards us and then Belen Mozo coming our way. Again, both were friendly, and Ms. Mozo thanked us for coming and wished us a good day. After watching more pairings over the next few hours, I decided to head back to the front for some refreshments.
I have had a knee replacement, and the other one is not so good either, so I was in a little pain going back up one of the hills. One of the workers noticed me and offered to give me a ride that was so thoughtful and considerate.
When I got back to the front, I noticed the NBA trophy sign and went to look and ended up taking a picture beside it, another great marketing ploy by the way. I immediately sent the photo to my sons who were part of the 1.3 million in Cleveland during the parade hoping to get a glimpse of the trophy, which they never did. So they were stunned to see me standing right next to it during a golf outing.
I proceeded to the 9th hole and the practice range to finish out my visit. I have to tell you, I have been to the Bridgestone tournament many times and still enjoy it, but as your ads say, "See Why It’s Different Out Here," they are true, and I firmly believe it's just an appreciation for the fans that I don't feel at any other sporting venues.
I will follow the rest of the action on TV this weekend and look forward to coming back next year and each year you have this wonderful tournament. Maybe next year my sons will get smart and come with me.
Great job LPGA, volunteers, golfers and the City of Sylvania. And, oh yes, go Sandra Gal!!
