Strong Field in Virginia
Players are returning to action this week at the Kingsmill Championship Presented by JTBC with 16 of the top-20 players in the Rolex Rankings in the field this week after many took off in recent weeks to get ready for what will be 11 consecutive events on Tour. World No.1 Lydia Ko, No.2 Inbee Park and No.3 Lexi Thompson headline the field, with all three teeing it up for the first time since April at the LOTTE Championship Presented by Hershey.
Where It All Began
This week, Minjee Lee returns to the site of her first win at the Kingsmill Championship where she captured her first title as a rookie on Tour in 2015. Lee will look to continue the great play she has shown to start 2016, having already won at the LOTTE Championship in Hawaii. Lee has missed one cut this season and finished outside the top-20 just twice.
Inbee Park Returns
After a final round 77 at the LOTTE Championship, Inbee Park withdrew from the Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic due to a finger injury. Park did not defend her title the following week at the Volunteers of America Texas Shootout and missed the Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic the first week of May. The world No.2 returns to action this week at an event where she hasn’t had much success, posting just one top-10 finish in 2013.
Park is anticipated to make her 10th start of what is her 10th year on Tour at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in June, which will earn her qualification for the LPGA Hall of Fame.
Want Another Win
Nine players have won on Tour in 2016, eight of which will tee it up this week at the Kingsmill Championship. This season’s multiple winners Haru Nomura and Lydia Ko are joined by first time winners Jenny Shin and Ariya Jutanugarn this week, as well as Hyo Joo Kim, Sei Young Kim and defending champion Minjee Lee. Lexi Thompson is also in the field, coming off an international victory at the JLPGA’s World Ladies Championship Salonpas Cup.
So Long Se Ri
As Se Ri Pak says farewell, in what is her last full season on the LPGA Tour, she makes a final stop this week in Virginia where she captured the 2004 Kingsmill Championship. That win was one of the biggest victories of her career by earning her the final point needed to qualify for the LPGA Hall of Fame and World Golf Hall of Fame. Pak officially qualified for the hall in 2007 in what was her 10th year on Tour.
