Top Of The Rankings
The world’s top-ranked player returns to action this week at the Fubon LPGA Taiwan Championship where Lydia Ko is defending her title. The world No.1 is making her first start since the Evian Championship where she secured the Rolex Annika Major Award for the best performance in major championships in 2016. World No.4 Brooke Henderson is making her 26th start of the season this week, coming off a T-4 showing last week in China for her best finish since her successful title defense in June at the Cambia Portland Classic. World No.9 Amy Yang is also in the field this week, coming off her seventh top-10 finish of the year last week in China.
Returning to History
Lydia Ko made history in Taiwan in 2015 in becoming the youngest player to capture her 10th victory on the LPGA Tour at 18 years, 6 months and 1 day old. Her nine-stroke victory was also the largest margin by a winner in 2015. With a win this week, Ko would pick up her fifth win of the season, matching Ariya Jutanugarn for the most wins in 2016. A win would also make Ko just the second player to successfully defend their title in Taiwan where Suzann Pettersen became the first to win in back-to-back years in 2012 and 2013.
Tseng Getting Back On Track
Yani Tseng captured the inaugural playing of this event in 2011 with a five-stroke victory ahead of Amy Yang. The win marked her seventh win of the year. Tseng will look to find that same spark again this week in what has been a difficult season for the former world No.1 who has already started to shake things up. Tseng made an instructor change following the Evian Championship, switching from Claude Harmon III to Gary Gilchrist and finished T-16 last week in China for her best finish of the year.
Winning Ways
11 of the winners in 2016 on Tour are teeing it up this week in Taiwan, including the most recent champion In-Kyung Kim who won last week’s Reignwood LPGA Classic. The victory was the fourth of Kim’s career and second worldwide win in the last month after also winning the Ladies European Tour’s ISPS Handa Ladies European Masters. Also in the field this week is two-time winner Ha Na Jang as well as reigning U.S. Women’s Open champion Brittany Lang in addition to first time winners in 2016 Jenny Shin and Caroline Masson.
Making History
Azahara Munoz returned to the winner's circle last week on the Ladies European tour where she won in front of a hometown crowd at the Andalucia Costa del Sol Open de Espana. Munoz grew up just 10 minutes from the golf club and became the first Spanish winner of the event. Munoz will look to carry that momentum this week into Taiwan in hopes of picking up her first win on Tour since 2012.
