Lydia Ko and Jordan Spieth are in a virtual dead heat even though they don’t compete against each other. In a comparison of the points competitions and the leaders on the LPGA and PGA Tour, the young professionals lead the way.
With a playoff victory at the Swinging Skirts LPGA last week, Ko extended her lead in the second season of the Race to the CME Globe. The 18-year-old has 2,005 points, good for a 449-point lead over rookie Sei Young Kim and 529 over Stacy Lewis. Ko and Kim are only multiple winners this season on the LPGA. Ko has accumulated two wins and seven finishes in the top seven in eight starts this season.
Hop over to the PGA Tour and see that Jordan Spieth, 21, leads the FedExCup standings with 2,009 points. Jimmy Walker is in second place, 392 points behind. Spieth has two wins, including the Masters Tournament, and has eight finishes of seventh or better this season.
This week, Ko is in the Dallas suburb of Irving, Texas, for the Volunteers of America North Texas Shootout. Spieth, a Dallas native and resident, will try to follow Ko’s performance in San Francisco. The World Golf Championships-Cadillac Match Play is scheduled for TPC Harding Park, just across Lake Merced from Lake Merced Golf Club where Ko won the Swinging Skirts.
Both season-long points competitions award 500 for first place (625 for a major victory on the LPGA and 600 on the PGA Tour) and down. Only those who make the cut earn points.
Ten tournaments have been completed in the second season of the Race to the CME Globe. The top three seeds entering November’s CME Group Tour Championship in Naples, Fla., can win it all. The top nine have a chance to capture the season-long title with a victory and help from those ahead of them.
The Race to the CME Globe is a season-long points competition in which LPGA Members accumulate points in every Official LPGA Tournament. At the end of the season, the winning player will be named the “Race to the CME Globe Champion.” The competition began at the Coates Golf Championship, continues through the Lorena Ochoa Invitational Presented by Banamex in Mexico and concludes with a points reset for the CME Group Tour Championship in Naples, Florida the week before Thanksgiving.
