DELRAY BEACH, Fla., April 23, 2015 – The LPGA Legends Tour, along with Seagate Hospitality Group, announced today the Walgreens Charity Championship presented by The Seagate Country Club will return to Delray Beach this fall.
Following a successful change of venue in November 2014 – following the inaugural event in 2013 at The Villages on the Nancy Lopez Legacy Course -- Seagate Hospitality Group CEO Tony Wilson said his South Florida club is pleased to welcome back The Legends Tour in 2015. The event will be staged Nov. 5-7.
“The response last year was overwhelmingly positive,” said Legends Tour CEO Jane Blalock, who brought to Delray Beach a field of 50 LPGA Tour veterans age 45 and over now competing on the official senior tour of the LPGA. “We found a terrific fan base here in the Palm Beach area.”
Players in the 2014 tournament field included such LPGA Hall of Famers as Nancy Lopez, Juli Inkster, Beth Daniel, Patty Sheehan and Pat Bradley. LPGA fan favorite and Delray Beach resident Meg Mallon won last year’s tournament, edging out runner-up Juli Inkster, for her first Legends Tour title. Mallon plans to return this fall to defend her title.
“It had been almost 10 years since I’d won a tournament,” said Mallon, winner of 18 LPGA Tour titles. “But more than winning, I loved showing off Delray Beach to my friends on The Legends Tour. They loved the area and can’t wait to come back.”
“These are the names of players many of us grew up with and it’s a thrill to play golf with them [in the pro-am], to see them play and to see how good they really are,” said Wilson. “We are very pleased to see these champions return to Seagate.”
Roger Lemke, District Manager for Walgreens Stores, believes the tournament furthers Walgreens’ community-centered mission, adding, “With the Legends leadership and professionalism showcased in this fantastic venue, we are given a unique opportunity to get our core message out into the local community. We are also able to support important charity partners, not only with funds raised, but by sharing their tremendous work with a new audience of prospective supporters.”
The Walgreens Charity Championship presented by The Seagate Country Club will benefit three charity partners in 2015: the Dan Marino Foundation, Bethesda Hospital Foundation and Achievement Centers for Children and Families.
Advanced tickets will be available soon for $15 per day at various local outlets and through charitable partners. Patrons can save $5 per day by purchasing advance tickets at area Walgreens locations, available starting in mid-September.
