This week, Lizette Salas defends her title at the Kingsmill Championship Presented by JTBC. The 25-year-old was born back in 1989, which got us reminiscing about the good old 80’s. Here’s a look back at the year that was and some of the biggest news happening in 1989.
2016 Solheim Cup Captain Juli Inkster won the ANA Inspiration, then Nabsico Dinah Shore, by five strokes ahead of JoAnne Carner and Tammie Green. It was the second title for Inkster at Mission Hills.
Betsy King won six times in 1989, including the U.S. Women’s Open, earning her Player of the Year honors as well as the top spot on the money list.
On the PGA Tour, Payne Stewart won the 1989 PGA Championship at Kemper Lakes Golf Club for his first major championship. He won by a stroke ahead of Andy Bean, Mike Reid and Curtis Strange.
In other news, Pete Rose was banned from baseball for life in August of 1989, New Kids on the Block enjoy the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 list with “I’ll be Loving You (Forever), and The Simpsons made its TV debut in December of ’89.
