BOSTON, July 30, 2015 – When the Legends Tour returns to French Lick Resort next month for the Legends Championship, course record holder Sherri Steinhauer will be in the field hoping to improve on her 2014 runner-finish and maybe even shave a stroke or two off her benchmark score.
"The Pete Dye course at French Lick is the only course record I hold,” said Steinhauer, who posted a 9-under-par score of 63 in last year’s championship to finish second behind winner Laurie Rinker. "The key to my low round last year was hitting it straight off the tee and, of course, making more putts than usual."
The Legends Championship presented by Old National Bank, will bring the official senior tour of the LPGA back to the Pete Dye Course at French Lick Resort for the third year.
The 36-hole event is the Legends Tour’s annual major championship and will kick off with The Oxford Financial Group Pro-Am tournament on Aug. 28, followed by two competitive rounds on Aug. 29-30. A field of 56 LPGA Legends Tour players will compete for a purse of $300,000.
Several members of the LPGA and World Golf Halls of Fame will be in the field. Hall of Famers at French Lick will be Pat Bradley, Donna Caponi, JoAnne Carner, recent inductee Laura Davies, Sandra Haynie, Juli Inkster and Hollis Stacy.
In addition, Legends Tour Hall of Fame member Jan Stephenson of Australia will be in the championship field.
Laurie Rinker, winner of the 2014 Legends Championship, plans to return to Indiana to defend her title. She has two LPGA Tour victories and four wins on the Legends Tour.
Rinker won last year’s rain-shortened event in 36 holes by one shot to edge out Steinhauer, who carded 10 birdies and one bogey en route to her second-round course record. The final round was canceled due to inclement weather.
Half a dozen “Super Legends” (age 63 and over) will compete for a separate purse, including Haynie, three-time U.S. Women’s Open champion Susie Berning and LPGA veteran players Jane Blalock, Sandra Palmer and Judy Dickinson.
French Lick hosted the 2015 Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid earlier this year, which Steinhauer watched with interest.
“I must admit I was watching the Senior PGA Championship closely,” said Steinhauer. “Tom Lehman and Peter Fowler tied for low round with matching scores of 67 on Friday, and Colin Montgomerie played steady to win the event. It was fun to watch and I feel honored to hold the course record there."
