The first playing of this week’s Yokohoma Tire LPGA Classic came back in 2007. Maria McBride won the inaugural event by one stroke ahead of Stacy Prammanasudh for her third victory on the LPGA Tour. Here’s a look back at what else was happening in the world of golf and around the world back in 2007.
Double the Fun
Paula Creamer was a two-time winner in 2007, winning both the SBS Open at Turtle Bay as well as The Mitchell Company LPGA Tournament of Champions, where she had an impressive 8-stroke victory over Birdie Kim. Her great play that season which included her third and fourth career LPGA victories nearly earned her the Vare Trophy, finishing runner-up to Lorena Ochoa.
The Season of Lorena
2007 was a good year for Lorena Ochoa, who won eight times including her first major championship at the RICOH Women’s British Open. Ochoa swept the season ending awards that included the Rolex Player of the Year as well as the Vare Trophy.
The U.S. Wins…Again
In what was the second of three consecutive victories, Team U.S.A. retained the Solheim Cup in 2007, defeating Europe 16 to 14. Captain Betsy King led the team to victory in what included an impressive showing by rookie Morgan Pressel, who defeated Annika Sorenstam in the Sunday singles matches 2&1.
A First for Cabrera on PGA Tour
Angel Cabrera won his first event on the PGA Tour and first major championship with his victory at the 2007 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club. Cabrera held off Jim Furyk and Tiger Woods to win by one stroke at 5-over par.
In Other News…
The first generation iPhone was unveiled by Steve Jobs and went on sale in June of 2007, Peyton Manning led the Indianapolis Colts to victory in the Super Bowl and Vladimir Putin was named Time Magazine’s Person of the Year.
