In Gee Chun took the lead on the 69th hole of the U.S. Women’s Open on Sunday and didn’t look back.
In her first appearance in the championship, Chun carded a final round 4-under par 66 including three consecutive birdies on 15, 16 and 17 to win by one-stroke ahead of 54-hole leader Amy Yang. Chun is a seven-time winner on the KLPGA including one major championship, the 2013 Korean Women’s Open. This week marks the South Korean's fifth start on the LPGA Tour this season, her best finishes were T-37 at the HSBC Women’s Champions and JTBC Founders Cup.
The last U.S. Women’s Open champion to win in their first start in the event was Birdie Kim in 2005 at Cherry Hills.
Yang held the lead until the 68th hole Sunday when she dropped into a three-way tie at the top with Chun and Stacy Lewis. She rallied from back-to-back bogeys with an eagle on the 16th hole and birdie on the 17th, entering the 72nd hole in a tie with Chun. Yang missed her par putt on 18 to fall one back and finish solo second at 7-under par.
Inbee Park and Stacy Lewis finished T-3 at 5-under par.
