BOSTON, April 29, 2014 – It’s been a long winter in Minnesota, but Michele Redman says she is ready to defend her title this weekend at the Legends Tour’s third annual Walgreens Charity Classic.
Set for May 3-4, at Grandview Golf Course in Sun City West, Ariz., Redman, an LPGA veteran and the head women’s golf coach at the University of Minnesota, hopes her game is sharp enough to retain the title she earned at last year’s event. The 36-hole stroke-play event will feature a field of 48 Legends Tour players competing for a $225,000 purse.
“Right now, I don’t have a lot of time to practice, but I love playing with the kids and that helps a lot,” said Redman, who won twice on the LPGA Tour and has two Legends Tour titles. “I don’t want to get beat, so that gives me some incentive playing against the college players.”
Known for her short game, Redman calls Grandview Golf Course “fair and fun,” adding that the course requires players to “hit the ball straight” and rewards accuracy.
In her third year leading the Minnesota women’s golf team, Redman says she is enjoying her new role as a coach, but also looks forward to the Legends Tour’s tournaments.
“I enjoy playing tournaments now a lot more than I used to,” Redman added. “I guess it’s because I have the best of both worlds, coaching and getting to compete every now and then.”
LPGA and World Golf Hall of Famers committed to compete in the event are Amy Alcott, Pat Bradley, JoAnne Carner, Donna Caponi, Nancy Lopez, Patty Sheehan and Hollis Stacy. Legends Tour Hall of Fame member Jan Stephenson also will compete.
