Alexis Keating and Angel Yin earn entry into Monday Qualifier.
Gigi Stoll, a senior-to be at Beaverton High School, shot a one-under 71 on Monday to win the Portland Classic Amateur Open at Langdon Farms Golf Club in Aurora, OR. Stoll, who competed in the U.S. Women’s Open at the age of 15, and who won the 2014 Bob Norquist Oregon Junior Girls Amateur and the Oregon Amateur Championship earlier this summer, made a run on the back nine to win the coveted spot by one shot over University of Colorado golfer Alexis Keating and 15-year old Angel Yin of Arcadia (California) High School.
Stoll will now tee it up against the best on the LPGA tour next week at the Portland Classic Presented by Cambia Health Solutions, August 28-August 31, at Columbia Edgewater Country Club. Keating and Yin, who is 4th in the GOLFWEEK junior national rankings, earn the opportunity to compete in the Monday Qualifier (August 25) for the LPGA event.
Stoll made a furious comeback to win the title, recording birdies at 13, 15,16 and 17 to get to one under. This is not Stoll’s first attempt in the Amateur Open, but certainly her most successful. As far as playing in her hometown, “it will be exciting to play in such a great event in front of my family and friends. That is just a great honor,” said Stoll.
Stoll said she is familiar with the tournament but from a different perspective. “I worked the LPGA tournament as a volunteer standard bearer for the Oregon Golf Association since I was about nine. To go from that experience to this is quite amazing,” added Stoll.
“These amateurs really put on a show today,” said Tom Maletis, President of Tournament Golf Foundation. “We had a great field and the level of competition shows how strong women’s amateur golf in the area has become.”
Stoll will join of a strong field that will feature 80 of the top 100 on the LPGA money list this year. She joins defending champion Suzann Pettersen, sponsor’s exemption Charley Hull of Great Britain and seven other former Portland event winners in the field of 144.
The Portland Classic this year will feature a purse of $1.3 million for the 72-hole event. Tournament play will be from Thursday August 28-Sunday August 31, at Columbia Edgewater. All four days of the event will be broadcast internationally on the Golf Channel.
