Two close finishes have highlighted the 2014 season thus far. American Jessica Korda picked up the win at the Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic, while Australian Karrie Webb overcame a 5-stroke deficit to pick up her 40th career LPGA victory at the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open last week. There are now four more events for players to lock in their spot and represent their country in the inaugural International Crown.
Scheduled to take place July 24-27 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, MD, the International Crown is a first-of-its-kind, biennial, global match play competition featuring teams from eight countries battling for the right to be “Crowned” the world’s best golf nation. Each of the countries will be represented by four players based on the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings announced on Monday March 31st at the Kraft Nabisco Championship.
As the third tournament begins this week at the Honda LPGA Thailand, South Korea and the United States remain firmly entrenched in the top-2 positions with Japan trailing both by 91 points.
Spain, with 255 points, made a move this past week, taking back the number four position from Thailand, with 256 points, after last week’s flip flop of the two countries. Azahara Munoz of Spain moved up two spots in the Rolex rankings to No. 33 thanks to her T-11th finish in Australia.
Following the exciting win in her native Australia this past weekend, Webb moved up one spot in the Rolex Rankings to No. 7 and leads the way for team Australia who currently sits in the eighth position. As play shifts to Thailand this week, there are plenty of storylines to watch in both the International Crown and Rolex Rankings races.
