Years down the road when rookie Kim Kaufman looks back at her career, she may think back to the last two weeks as the two that forever altered her career.
With back-to-back top-25 finishes – including a tie for 5th at the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open and a tie for 25th at the Portland Classic Presented by Cambia Health Solutions – Kaufman has vaulted to 50th on this year’s money list ($182,005) and earned more in the last two weeks ($94,813) than she had in the 10 events prior. It’s been a dramatic turnaround for Kaufman who missed six of eight cuts since her tie for 4th at the North Texas Shootout Presented by JTBC in early May. That start upped her priority and ensured she’d get in more tournaments the rest of the year. However, the last two weeks have given her a solid chance to be in the field for any of the limited field events the rest of the year that she wants to play in.
So what changed? In short, everything.
Last Two Tournaments
Driving Accuracy: 83.9%
Greens in Regulation: 79.86%
Putts: 29.75
Scoring Average: 69.25
10 Tournaments Prior
Driving Accuracy: 67.8%
Greens in Regulation: 68.84%
Putts: 31.13
Scoring Average: 72.26
To put those numbers into perspective, her greens in regulation percentage over the last two weeks would be tops on Tour, and her driving accuracy percentage would rank tied for second. Her scoring average would just narrowly edge out Stacy Lewis’ at the top of the standings. There’s an argument that London Hunt & Country Club’s wide fairways and multi-tiered greens skew the numbers somewhat, but the fairways were as narrow and the greens as tiny as almost any the players will see all season the week after at Columbia Edgewater Country Club.
Maybe more importantly, though, what do those numbers really mean? To give some context, they mean Kaufman’s hit nearly two more greens and two more fairways per round over the last two events than she had prior. And that’s a good recipe for success.
