Resolution Number 1
New Year’s Resolutions… they are famous right? If you don’t have one, you at least have been told you should. But what are they really? Are they vague phrases that disappear after a month or two? …unattainable fantasies from the “I wish agenda”? ...or what?
Okay, so the word resolution comes from the root word resolve which according to Google means, “a firm determination to do something (noun).” Now THAT is a good starting point.
Okay, here I go… my first shot at a resolution… “Be better at life period”. Sounds good to me, simple too… Just do better. I mean, when the kids I substitute ask me, “So have you like won a golf tournament or do you like have kids or a dog or anything?”… I get to say (at least to the golf) “like yeh, duh” instead of, “well you know things take time.”
I was out testing my same old resolve to do better today while I was hitting balls for the first time this year at the range. I have not hit in a while so I was pretty off frankly. Sometimes when I’m at the back of the range and it is cold and no one is out there and I’m riding the struggle bus, well, I admittedly hit a frustration point where I start talking to myself and cursing. “Bleep just do BETTER… expletive, expletive, expletive!” Hopefully, there are no cameras around back there because well foolish is a good word for it.
Anyway, the point being is that things take time and resolve is not stomping around at the back of the range… it’s having a firm determination to do something. So no more range raging for me… time to make a plan and get specific.
Before I make my plan though, I’ve got to rewind and remember what I was resolved to do last year… play on the Epson Tour.
Those golfers, who played in every single one of the 2013 Epson Tour’s regular season golf tournaments, played fifteen courses at a length of 6,301 yards on average, thus walking from tee to green 3.6 miles a round, 10.8 miles a tournament, and 162 miles for the season. That is how many miles Epson Tour players potentially walked in 2013 if they hit it dead straight like me, were able to apperate from green to tee box, and skipped practice rounds because who needs to know all of that stuff anyway.
If for some reason, tour players decided to drive from every Epson Tour tournament to the next starting in Arizona and ending in Daytona Beach, they would have put point to point 8,552 miles on their cars (Mapquest calculation attempt… reminder I am not a math major). In between the road-trips they would have found themselves playing through wind, rain, and heat with whatever game they happened to have that week (be it the elusive A game or the less agreeable eFFFort game) under whatever pressure they happened to put on themselves.
I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that resolving to do 162 walking miles and 8,552 destination miles, under pressure and in the elements showed darn good resolve from every tour player that put in anything close to those sorts of hours in 2013. Personally, with the help of some other tours, I’m giving myself credit for about three quarters of that schedule.
So here is my Number 1 Golfing New Year’s Resolution (health allowing).
- I am going to happily and thankfully do it again.
The rest of my specific “Golf Plan: 2014” is obviously a secret, duh. I can’t be having y’all stealing my mojo and getting’ a leg up!
