FALMOUTH, MAINE, Sept. 11, 2013 – Defending champion Sherri Turner is eager to retain her title this weekend when The Legends Tour, the official senior tour of the LPGA, returns to Maine for the Harris Golf Charity Classic.
The professional event will be staged Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 14-15) for the second year at Falmouth Country Club outside Portland, Maine.
Turner arrives in New England riding the momentum of winning earlier this season at the LPGA Legends Swing for the Cure event in Kenmore, Wash. She defeated Rosie Jones and Val Skinner at last year’s event in Maine, played as the Hannaford Community Challenge.
“Winning on a course that I really like brings good feelings and confidence,” said Turner, an Arizona resident who won three tournaments on the LPGA Tour. “Falmouth Country Club is a great test of golf and I am looking forward to the challenge of defending my title. Everything just clicked together last year, so hopefully it will again this week.”
The tournament will feature a field of 40 Legends Tour professionals competing in a 36-hole, stroke-play event. Two one-day pro-am tournaments will be held Thursday and Friday, starting at 11 a.m. each day.
Making her first appearance in Falmouth will be Canada’s Lorie Kane, who still competes on the LPGA Tour. Kane has won four LPGA tournaments and has one win on The Legends Tour at the 2011 Wendy’s Charity Classic.
Five New England natives in this week’s event are: Jane Blalock of New Hampshire; LPGA Hall of Famer Pat Bradley of Massachusetts; Laurel Kean of Maine; Laura Shanahan-Rowe of New Hampshire; and Vermont native and LPGA Hall of Famer Patty Sheehan.
Joining Bradley and Sheehan in the tournament field will be fellow LPGA and World Golf Hall of Fame members JoAnne Carner, Donna Caponi and Hollis Stacy.
LPGA veterans Rosie Jones of Atlanta and Illinois native Nancy Scranton of St. Augustine, Fla., are each five-time winners on the Legends Tour. The tour’s most recent champion, Sherri Steinhauer of Wisconsin, who won the Wendy’s Charity Challenge last month in Michigan, also will be in the tournament field.
Tickets for the tournament are $20 for the weekend (Saturday and Sunday) and will be available at the gate. Ticket purchase includes a free round of golf at any of the semi-private clubs run by Harris Golf in Maine.
Kids 13 and under and all military personnel with ID get in free. Parking is free during tournament week along the right side of Inverness Road surround the golf course. All ticket proceeds will benefit Camp Susan Curtis and The First Tee of Maine.
