BOSTON, Jan. 9, 2013 - The Legends Tour, official tour for LPGA professionals age 45 and over, announced today that at least nine events will be played in 2013, including two new stops in Florida and Indiana.
"We are very excited about this year's schedule as we continue to plant seeds in new markets while maintaining a strong tradition with our existing events," said Jane Blalock, CEO of The Legends Tour and 27-time LPGA Tour Champion. "We are thankful for the continued and tremendous support of our partners and sponsors."
The Legends Tour, founded in 2000, features some of the greatest names in the history of women's golf, including Hall of Famers Nancy Lopez, Patty Sheehan and Pat Bradley, along with LPGA Tour standouts Laura Davies, Jan Stephenson, Rosie Jones and Liselotte Neumann.
Event formats range from single-day pro-ams to three-day tournaments and feature fields of up to 44 players with no tournament cuts.
Walgreens will kick off the 2013 season with its Walgreens Charity Classic in Sun City West, Ariz., set for Feb. 22-24, at Grandview Golf Club. Last year's three-day event drew thousands of area residents who watched Rosie Jones take the title with a 5-under finish.
In addition to the season opener, Walgreens added a new Legends Tour event for 2013. The Walgreens Charity Championship will be held on Nancy Lopez's Legacy Course at The Villages in Florida, from April 26-28.
French Lick Resort in French Lick, Ind., will host the inaugural Legends Tour Championship from Sept. 23-28. This new 36-hole tournament will showcase more than 60 Legends professionals on the challenging Pete Dye Course, named one of Golf Digest’s Top 100 Courses in America. Event activities support a weeklong celebration of women's golf that includes a pro-am, the Alice Dye Invitational, a women's clinic and other community outreach programs to benefit the American Heart Association.
The longest-running tournament on The Legends Tour schedule, the ISPS Handa Cup, will return for its eighth consecutive year. The event will return to Reunion Resort and Club in Kissimmee, Fla., from May 3-5. This international team competition features U.S.-born vs. Internationally-born Legends in a two-day contest of team and individual matches. Last year's tournament ended in a 24-24 tie with the defending champion U.S. team retaining the Cup.
LPGA fan favorite Laura Davies headlined last year's 4th annual ISPS Handa Legends Tour Open Championship and won her Legends Tour debut at the event, which was staged at Innisbrook, A Salamander Golf & Spa Resort in Palm Harbor, Fla. This year's championship will return to the Tampa Bay area from Nov. 8-10, continuing its tradition of supporting military troops as it coincides with Veterans Day.
Other returning tournaments to The Legends Tour schedule include the Judson Collegiate Invitational in mid-July in Atlanta, Ga.; the LPGA Legends Swing for the Cure in Seattle, Wash., in late July; and the Wendy's Charity Challenge in August in Jackson, Mich.
