Falmouth Country Club to Host The Harris Golf Charity Classic
PORTLAND, MAINE, April 17, 2013 –Harris Golf and The Legends Tour announced today that an LPGA Legends Tour event will return to Maine this fall. The Harris Golf Charity Classic will be held at Falmouth Country Club near Portland, Maine, Sept. 12-15.
The 36-hole event will feature a field of 40 Legends Tour professionals competing for a $200,000 purse. Tournament week will also include two one-day pro-am events. This will be the Tour’s second stop at Falmouth Country Club, which previously hosted a Legends Tour tournament in June 2012.
“This event is important for all Mainers,” said Dick Harris, Falmouth Country Club Founder and Director of Golf. “We’re very pleased to again be partnering with The Legends Tour to bring an event like this—boasting players of this caliber—back to the state.”
The Legends Tour is comprised of the some of the greatest names in women’s golf and has more than 100 members, including 12 LPGA and World Golf Halls of Fame members. Legends Tour members have combined for more than 650 LPGA Tour victories and 70 major championships. The Legends Tour has offered 12 seasons of competition for LPGA players age 45-over.
Previous event rosters have included such players as Nancy Lopez, Beth Daniel, Meg Mallon, Rosie Jones, Patty Sheehan and Pat Bradley. The defending champion from last year’s event in Falmouth is LPGA veteran Sherri Turner.
“The LPGA Legends are thrilled to partner with Harris Golf to once again, bring these world-class LPGA players to the state of Maine,” said Jane Blalock, a New England native and 27-time LPGA Tour winner who serves as CEO of The Legends Tour. “I’ve already heard from several of our players who are excited to return to the greater Portland area and to the challenging Falmouth Country Club course.”
In addition to bringing world-class golf to Maine, the event will benefit multiple local charities. Harris Golf expects to make an official announcement soon regarding the benefitting charities.
“Taking on the event ourselves gave us an exciting opportunity to give back to the communities that support our clubs across the state,” said Matt Barnard, a spokesperson for Harris Golf. “Right now, we’re considering organizations that do important work here in our state.”
Measuring over 6,900 yards (par 72) and built on 425 acres in 1986, Falmouth Country Club will provide a formidable venue for The Legends Tour with its large, undulating greens and challenging, tree-lined fairways.
True to its reputation as Maine’s premier competitive venue, Falmouth has also hosted the New England Amateur, the Maine Amateur, the Maine Open, the Tri-State Amateur and a USGA Amateur Qualifier.
Tickets will be available through local charities, as well as at the gate during tournament week and online through www.thelegendstour.com
