WINNER ANNOUNCED FOR UNIQUE BIB DESIGN COMPETITION FOR HSBC CADDY OF THE YEAR
Singapore, 16 February 2011…HSBC today announced the winner of the special Caddy Bib Design Competition for the HSBC Caddy of the Year awards. 20-year-old Priyatna Sungkono from Raffles Design Institute (RDI) emerged as the winner of the contest which involved more than 30 students from the school’s Visual Communication Department.
For the second year running, HSBC partnered with RDI to organise the competition for a unique caddie bib that the HSBC Caddy of the Year will wear during the HSBC Women’s Champions 2011.
Given a brief to design a caddy bib with a cross-cultural theme that also reflects the prestige of the tournament, the third-year students worked on their designs over a period of three weeks.
The list of entries were cut to a final 10 but it was Priyatna who walked away with the winning design and a prize of $1,000 deposited into an HSBC bank account in his name, along with a goodie bag of prizes from the tournament sponsors and seasonal passes to attend the tournament.
Priyatna’s inspiration for the design centred on a modern representation of a Western female golfer immersed in Asian culture and more specifically, traditional dance. The Asian folding fans in the background of the design symbolise the opening of a folding fan by a dancer and serves as a metaphor for the launch of the fourth edition of the HSBC Women’s Champions 2011.
The design is also focused on the golf swing, with the swoosh made up of brush splashes blended with triangle elements to resemble the dynamism and spirit of the tournament. The end of the swoosh represents HSBC’s sponsorship of the tournament with the use of six red triangles present in HSBC’s official logo.
“I am truly very happy to have won the Caddy Bib Design Competition and I am proud of my achievement. It was a challenging process to design the caddy bib especially when it came to conceptualising my idea for it. Looking back, this has also been one of the most exciting and fun projects that I have worked on and I am grateful to HSBC and my school for this opportunity”, said Priyatna.
Meanwhile, 21-year-old Ng Shu Lin and 22-year-old Sabrina Lau lost out narrowly and placed second and third respectively in the contest. For their efforts, they will also receive a goodie bag of prizes from the tournament sponsors as well as seasonal passes to attend the tournament.
“There were some excellent designs created by the students and there’s a vibrancy and dynamism to both this year’s winning bib, and last year’s too, which may be a reflection of Singapore as a whole,” said Giles Morgan, HSBC Group Head of Sponsorship.
“Priyatna deserves to be very proud, particularly as the caddies themselves really appreciate the fact that they get recognised each year; it’s their version of the Oscars!“
The HSBC Caddy of the Year awards, which celebrates the unsung heroes in professional golf, have become a mainstay event for both the HSBC Women’s Champions and the HSBC Champions.
As one of the highlights of the year for players and “loopers” alike, HSBC hosts the caddies’ night during the week of the tournament and the HSBC Caddy of the Year is crowned, in recognition of his or her work during the previous season.
The winning caddy bib design will be presented to the HSBC Caddy of the Year and millions of fans worldwide will be able to catch a glimpse of the winning design on TV when the winner wears it throughout the weekend of the tournament.
Last year, Australian Dean Herden, caddy for Jiyai Shin, received the honour of for his role in the young Korean’s highly successful seasons on the LPGA Tour in 2008 and 2009.
Raffles Design Institute was thrilled to be part of this initiative again and Kenji Choo, Programme Director for the Visual Communication Department at Raffles Design Institute commented, “The students had a wonderful time taking on the challenge to design the caddy bibs. It is the second year that the Raffles Design Institute has collaborated with HSBC for the HSBC Women’s Champions and it has allowed our students to gain valuable industry experience and at the same time, provide global exposure for their works.”
The HSBC Women’s Champions 2011 takes place from 24 to 27 February at the Tanah Merah Country Club. Widely regarded as ‘Asia’s Major’, the fourth edition of the tournament will see 63 of the world’s top female golfers battle it out over 72 holes of individual stroke play for an increased prize purse of US$1.4 million.
Asia’s female golfing superstars Jiyai Shin, Na Yeon Choi and Yani Tseng, along with Ai Miyazato have confirmed their participation in the tournament which will also feature global golfing icons such as Paula Creamer, Cristie Kerr and Michelle Wie.
