Gladstone, N.J. – Tournament officials announced today that 2010 champion of the Sybase Match Play Championship Sun Young Yoo has committed to defend her title at this year’s Tournament. Yoo will join 63 of the best female golfers in the world as they battle head-to-head during the only LPGA Tour match-play event returning to Hamilton Farm Golf Club, May 19 – 22.
Yoo faced stiff competition in 2010 with the toughest draw of any player in the field. Yoo, as the No. 28 seed, defeated Karen Stupples (34), Cristie Kerr (5), Song-Hee Kim (12), Yani Tseng (4), Jiyai Shin (1), and Angela Stanford (10) en route to her victory.
“We are excited to have Sun Young Yoo back to defend her title this year,” said Andy Bush, the Tournament’s Executive Director. “Yoo demonstrated extreme determination and endurance during the four-day competition by overcoming some of the best players in the field. Her victory is a true testament to the uniqueness and excitement of our match-play format.”
Yoo had an excellent 2010 campaign on the LPGA Tour as she recorded three top-10 finishes. After her victory at the 2010 Sybase Match Play Championship, Yoo finished T11 the following week at the State Farm Classic, and T8 at the LPGA Hana Bank Championship in October. Her win coupled with excellent play throughout the season vaulted her to 29th on the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings.
Originally from South Korea, Yoo turned professional in 2004 and competed on the Futures Tour in 2005. With her one victory and ten top-10 finishes, Yoo finished 5th on the money list earning her exempt status on the LPGA Tour in 2006. Yoo has gotten off to a fast start in 2011 posting two top-10 finishes in her first four events.
