LPGA stars were out in full force on Wednesday at the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia tournament-opening press conference. The top seven players from the Rolex Rankings were joined by tournament VIPs to signal the beginning of the Kuala Lumpur-based event which tees off on Friday. The support of the country was evident with a full house of sponsors, supporters and media.
The players experienced a bit of Malaysian culture following the press event, trying their hands at traditional pewter knocking. All seven knocked their names into photo frames that will be displayed as keepsakes at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club.
On Tuesday, Michelle Wie, Natalie Gulbis and Cristie Kerr visited the Sime Darby Medical Center to learn more about the Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation (CARIF) and breast cancer treatment methods in Malaysia. The players helped to unveil a purple lilac ribbon, which represents all cancers and general cancer awareness, on the side building wall of the Sime Darby Cancer Centre. The cancer ribbon also symbolizes that the Sime Darby Cancer Centre is a regional centre of excellence for cancer treatment and management.
Tournament play in the inaugural Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia will be broadcast Friday through Sunday from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Eastern Time on Golf Channel.
