DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Aug. 27, 2009 - Last evening at a Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Player Meeting in Portland, Ore., LPGA Acting Commissioner Marty Evans announced that the LPGA and Wegmans have agreed to a three-year extension for the Wegmans LPGA, with the option for additional one-year extensions. The event, which for the past 33 years has been played at Locust Hill Country Club in Pittsford, N.Y., will continue to feature a $2 million purse in 2010.
"For more than 30 years, Rochester has been a favorite stop on the LPGA Tour and we are thrilled to ensure that the Wegmans LPGA will continue to be a part of our promising future," said Evans. "It's refreshing to see our collaborative efforts result in the return of this beloved event to this incredibly supportive community."
Colleen Wegman, President of Wegmans Food Markets said, "On behalf of Wegmans, I am pleased to extend this longstanding partnership with the LPGA. We look forward to having the talented LPGA players return to compete and entertain the enthusiastic fans of Rochester for years to come. The tournament proceeds will help us continue to positively impact the lives of children through our Graduation is the Goal Fund."
LPGA officials look forward to seeing who will be next to join the long list of past champions including Tour legends Nancy Lopez, Rosie Jones, Pat Bradley and Patty Sheehan, as well as current stars Lorena Ochoa, Karrie Webb and Jeong Jang. Jang, the 2006 Wegmans LPGA champion, said, "I am so excited that I'll be able to return to Locust Hill next year. Since winning there, I've looked forward to playing and helping local charities. But it's the people in the Rochester area who are truly incredible. They are not only huge golf fans, but they are so focused on helping one another. I love being a part of that."
The 2009 LPGA Tour calendar features 28 official money events with prize money totaling nearly $50 million. This week marks the first of a six-week stretch in which players will be jetting around the United States and Canada to play in events that will help them improve their status on the 2009 LPGA Official Money List and garner valuable points toward end-of-the-year honors, such as Rolex Player of the Year and the Vare Trophy for the lowest scoring average. Additionally, players will try to solidify one of 120 spots in November's season-ending LPGA Tour Championship in Houston, Texas, where the LPGA will also announce its full 2010 Tour schedule.
