Only three events remain for U.S.-born LPGA players to earn points toward a spot on the 2009 U.S. Team
SUGAR GROVE, Ill., July 8, 2009 - The U.S. Women's Open tees off tomorrow with double U.S. Solheim Cup Team points up for grabs. One of just three events remaining until the 2009 Solheim Cup teams are announced on Sunday, Aug. 2 following the RICOH Women's British Open, the U.S. Women's Open could provide a major boost for those in - or out - of the current top 10.
"The pressure is on for the players in the next three tournament weeks," said U.S. Solheim Cup Team Captain Beth Daniel, who will be on-site at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa. to scout her players.
"I know the players are feeling some stress and I am too."
With a victory this week (worth 120 points), nine different players in the top 21 have an opportunity to move into the top 10, although Michelle Wie (16th) and Wendy Ward (17th) are not in the Open field. Players in the top 10 following the RICOH Women's British Open will earn automatic spots on the 2009 U.S. Solheim Cup Team. Daniel will then add two captain's picks at a press conference where both the U.S. and European Teams will be announced.
All U.S.-born LPGA players finishing in the top 20 of this week's major championship will earn points toward a spot on the 2009 U.S. Solheim Cup Team. Double points will also be awarded at the RICOH Women's British Open. During Solheim Cup years, points are already worth 1 ½ times what they are worth during non-Solheim Cup years, so in effect, a U.S. winner of the 2009 U.S. Women's Open or RICOH Women's British Open would earn triple the points she could have earned for winning a non-major in 2008.
